Pruning trees

This manual was prepared as a part of the OTI funded project “Vocational Trainings on Carpet Weaving in Fakiha village & pruning in Aanjar” which was implemented by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) through the generous support of OTI Lebanon in Anjar –Kfar Zabad Himas.

The Bekaa was highly affected by the Syrian crisis. 1,120,518 registered Syrian refugees reside in Lebanon as per 1 July 2014 UNHCR statistics. Their presence engendered basic resources and increased competition over job opportunities.
In order to mitigate the crisis tensions in the Bekaa & reduce resource and economic strains on the affected Hima communities, namely Hima Anjar& Kfar Zabad , OTI Lebanon has contributed in meeting the livelihood stresses of those communities through this project.

The following project aimed to offer alternative income generating activities for women and youngsters, thus reducing the competition over job opportunities between the host communities and the Syrian refugees. Furthermore, it contributed to scaling up the traditional pruning practices of old farmers and offered them new pruning techniques which contributed to improving their agriculture, which is considered the main source of livelihood in the Bekaa. .
Through the project, around 30 Lebanese and Syrian men were trained on new pruning techniques between March and April 2014, through a three-days extensive workshop and ongoing vocational training supported by a technical expert & assistant. Trainees were provided with the pruning tools to facilitate their access to job.

The following Manual is intended to anyone who is interested to learn about the pruning techniques for the different types of fruit trees. It provides an over view about pruning with illustrations. It also highlights the importance of pruning, the different techniques depending on tree type, equipment to be used, and timing.
