Sustainable Hunting and the Hunter’s Guide

Sustainable hunting is one of the main leading programs that SPNL has been working on since long time ago. It represents the environmental NGOs on the Hunting Higher Council-HHC in Lebanon, whereby a lot of achievements have been done in this field. On the local level, SPNL helped in the elaboration of draft legal decrees and decisions for the hunting law, organized a national workshop on sustainable hunting in collaboration with USFS and Ministry of Environment, organized training workshops for law enforcement officers on bird identification, conservation and legal issues, capacity building on conflict resolution skills involving stakeholders in the hunting issue in Lebanon, produced awareness material targeting mainly hunters on globally threatened birds species, game species, and bird field guide in Arabic, in addition to an educational manual for school children.

And one of the latest achievements is the publishing of the hunter’s guide which is the reference book for the hunter in order to pass the exam needed for the hunting license according to hunting law 580/2004.

This guide includes information about the hunting equipments and weapons with several facts about their features, the ammunition, how they function, and how they should be cleaned and stored. Moreover, it covers the basic skills for shooting or hunting, the hunter’s ethics and responsibilities, the concept of sustainable hunting, planning and safety skills, the Lebanese hunting law, conservation of the nature and wildlife, importance of Lebanon to birds migration, in addition to the list of bird species in Lebanon and the game birds that can be hunted.

On regional level, SPNL participated in the production of reports on status of hunting, guidelines for hunting management for governments, and code of practice manual for hunters, thus providing the basis for a ‘model ‘of sustainable approach to birds hunting.
