SPNL and TyN Bringing Back Transhumanze to Save Biodiversity

The Society for the protection of nature in Lebanon (SPNL) signed a partnership agreement with Transhumancia y Naturaleza – Spain (TyN). Both parties agreed to pursue their shared objectives through means of a Partnership Agreement establishing the basis for mutual collaboration and development of projects aiming at linking nature and culture conservation through pastoralism and transhumance. TyN team that visited Lebanon consisted of Francesca Pasetti and Concha Salguero.

Prominent Hunters Sign Declaration On Responsible Hunting

Hunters from Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Yemen and Ethiopia have signed a Regional Declaration on Responsible Hunting [1], at a ceremony organised by the BirdLife International and UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) project, in coordination with the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL), BirdLife in Lebanon.

Bird-watching can help boost ecotourism industry in Lebanon

SPNL held a three-day workshop entitled “Mainstreaming Conservation of Migratory Soaring Birds into the Eco-tourism Sector” at Coral Beach Hotel, Beirut within the Migratory Soaring Bird Project-MSB Lebanon component funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Development Program and the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon. Various stakeholders from different private and public sectors, such as ministries, tour operators, NGOs, and experts in the field of environment and tourism, attended the workshop.

Hima el-Fekha Environmental Festival Helps Women Empowerment

El-Fekha village has witnessed an intense activity related to the Hima protected area and promoting women empowerment for conservation and livelihood. More than 150 persons including 70 women have participated in the different activities of the Festival and more than 6 Million Lebanese Pounds have been directly injected into the local economy of the village in a period of one weekend.

SPNL Participates in ENPI Horizon 2020 Workshop

Through SPNL’s work on the national, regional and international level, SPNL was nominated by the ministry of Environment to participate in a regional workshop on sustainable development that was conducted under the ENPI Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme.

Workshop in El Fekha on Sustainable Hunting

As part of SPNL’s efforts towards sustainable Hunting a workshop was held at Al Fekha municipality, nine hunters attended, including the Mayor of Al Fekha Municipality Mr. Antoine Al Khoury. The aim of the workshop was to inform the hunters, about the updated hunting law and its decrees related to the issuing of hunting license, violations, and penalties as well as the types of permitted game birds in hunting.

Threatened Species: Dalmatian Pelican

The Dalmatian Pelican is a migratory soaring bird that is listed as “vulnerable” as per the IUCN Red-list. It breeds in Eastern Europe and east central Asia, and the current population estimates ranges between 10,000-20,000 individuals.
