New Hima in Ain Zebdeh-Kherbet Anafar in Bekaa Valley

SPNL has started collaborating with the private sector in Lebanon in its mission to protect the environment. Recently, SPNL initiated a partnership with the West Bekaa Country Club and established on its premises the first sustainable hunting center in the Middle East. In this context, SPNL also partnered with Sayd Magazine to launch a series of training sessions and calendar events to hunters across Lebanon on sustainable hunting.

SPNL launches its website in French

This week, The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon – SPNL launched its website in French. After the English and Arabic versions, this is the third language for the Society’s main news website. Dedicated to experts, activists, journalists and nature lovers, and birds enthusiasts, this website showcases all SPNL projects and news, and provides all the essential information about the organization.

Celebrating World Wetlands Day

February 2nd marks World Wetlands Day, the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea (the so-called Ramsar Convention). This year the focus is on Wetlands & Agriculture: Partners for Growth, placing a focus on the need for the wetland and agricultural sectors (and the water sector) to work together for the best shared outcomes. Book Review: State of Lebanon’s Birds & IBAs”

Here’s a look at what’s buzzing in the new publication “State of Lebanon’s Birds & IBAs” collated & edited by Assad Serhal and Bassima Khatib, the book is  the nation’s supreme and most comprehensive publication about birds and important bird areas in Lebanon. The book is the latest outcome of the Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) project which aims to integrate conservation of visiting birds into these key economic sectors of our societies. MSB Lebanon is hosted by the Ministry of Environment and implemented by the UNDP country office. It is technically supported by BirdLife’s partner in Lebanon, the Society for Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL).

Save The Last Turtle Sanctuary In Hima Qoleileh and Mansouri

Mansouri and Qolaila beaches are two of the most beautiful and clean beaches in Lebanon and are also well protected turtle reserves by local community initiative. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon announced this high marine biodiversity area, a Hima, on 13 December 2006 for Hima Qolaili and 16 February 2008 for Hima Mansouri, to protect the southern Lebanese coast and its terrestrial and marine resources, especially globally threatened sea turtles (Green Turtles and Leatherback Turtles). It covers an area of approximately eight thousand square meters

SPNL Announce “On the move” Photo Exhibition

Celebrating the Transhumant Shepherds and Nomadic Pastoralists of the Mediterranean

“On the Move” is an exhibition of professional photography (and film) commissioned by the Mediterranean Consortium for Nature and Culture in collaboration with the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL). It celebrates the lives, challenges and ecological knowledge of transhumant shepherds and nomadic pastoralists in the Mediterranean region. From North Africa to the Middle East, from the Iberian Peninsula to Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, the work of 5 professional photographers will be featured in this unique traveling exhibition.

UNW FGE selects SPNL Programme “Al-Hima System: a Mean of Women Empowerment” for South-South Expo in Qatar

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) “Al-Hima System: a Mean of Women Empowerment” solution has been selected to reflect the UNW FGE Portfolio as a modality for South-South cooperation, in the First Arab States regional South-South Development EXPO to be held in Doha-Qatar from 18 to 20 February 2014.

Threatened Species » Northern Bald Ibis

The Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) is a critically endangered migratory species as per the IUCN Red List, with a remaining population in Turkey, Syria, and Morocco. Formerly, the population of the Northern Bald Ibis had been spread over Northern Africa and the Middle East.
