SPNL in brief
The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) was established in 1983. It is the national partner of BirdLife International and member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
For 40 years, SPNL worked to protect nature and wildlife, resulting in the declaration of 15 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Lebanon.
SPNL is now focused on reviving the Hima system, which has been prevalent in the Arab region for more than 1500 years. Its approach is based on community engagement in protecting nature, resources and biodiversity. To date, 31 Himas have been established throughout Lebanon in cooperation with municipalities. SPNL’s work has significantly contributed to raising awareness about environmental issues and conservation in Lebanon.
