Dismantling 460 meters of mist nets in Anfeh and Al Borjein

The Anti-poaching unit that works as a Liaison between for Sustainable Hunting program for SPNL (Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon), and the Middle East Sustainable Hunting Center (MESHC) in partnership with Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS), conducted today, field investigations around the town of Anfeh, an ancient city located in Northern Lebanon.
400 meters of mist nets that had been illegally set up to catch migratory birds were dismantled and seized in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces (ISF)

The same action was conducted last week around the village of Al Borjein, Mount Lebanon. The team in cooperation with the municipal police dismantled more than 60 meters of mist nets that had been illegally set up to catch birds.

The action was in response to recent intelligence received regarding industrial-scale trapping to target and kill songbirds for illegal sale on the black market.
The estimated mean number of individual birds killed illegally is 248 per square kilometer each year. There are 296 species of bird occurring regularly in Lebanon, with around 59% of these being killed illegally in significant numbers.
The anti-poaching project in Lebanon is based on partnership and cooperation between MESHC and SPNL on the one hand, and between SPNL and the MSB – Migratory Soaring Birds Project funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and the project to fight illegal hunting funded by MAVA, and EV New LIFE project, under the EU fund, on the other hand.
