Wow! We did it!! It’s time to CELEBRATE!

Today in Geneva, the UN’s Human Rights Commission adopted the resolution of the universal right to a healthy environment and it’s on its way to the UN General Assembly. There were NO naysayers, it was a ringing endorsement.

It was just as the pandemic was breaking in the spring of 2020 that we launched 1Planet1Right and, to be honest, it seemed like a long shot. However, Patricia Zurita and many others mobilized all of us together and we popularized the idea of this new human right, taking it directly to the public through the entire BirdLife family around the globe.
This truly signals what we hope will be the beginning of a new era in environmental policy and rights after decades of demands from civil society and Indigenous Peoples organizations.
Today we celebrate, this landmark recognition, and we celebrate also World Migratory Bird Day. We Sing, Fly, Soar, like a Bird, but we’re already working on bringing this into and aligning with the Biodiversity and Climate COP agendas and of course the United Nations General Assembly.
