In a groundbreaking conservation effort, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) has partnered with Ras El Matn Municipality and the Ministry of Environment to launch an innovative initiative aimed at protecting the Upper Beirut River Valley. This project introduces a new conservation model in Lebanon, bringing together multiple villages under the umbrella of a Natural Park.

What is a Natural Park?

A Natural Park is a protected area recognized for its biodiversity and ecological significance. It serves as a model for long-term land preservation, balancing sustainable resource management, nature-based tourism, and community development. The park will implement strategic land-use planning while limiting unsustainable agricultural expansion and real estate development.

A Collective Vision for Conservation

The Upper Matn Natural Park aims to unite local communities under a shared vision, with key objectives including:

Biodiversity Conservation – Safeguarding ecosystems and protecting local wildlife.
Environmental Awareness – Educating communities about nature’s value and their role in conservation.
Capacity Building – Enhancing local knowledge and engagement in environmental protection.
Policy Development – Establishing clear regulations for natural resource management.
Economic Growth – Creating nature-based tourism opportunities, sustainable jobs, and local markets.
Cultural Connection – Strengthening the relationship between communities and their land, preserving local traditions.

Beyond conservation, the park will serve as a recreational space, providing opportunities for people to relax, engage with nature, and actively participate in decision-making about their environment.

Key Milestones Achieved in 2024

This year marked significant progress in developing the Upper Matn Natural Park:

  • Strategic Meetings: SPNL engaged with Ras El Matn Municipality to initiate the process.
  • Municipal Collaboration: Discussions were held with other interested municipalities to expand the initiative.
  • Ministry of Environment Engagement: Coordination efforts ensured governmental support.
  • Public Launch Event: A high-level event introduced the initiative and its vision to the wider public.
  • Workshops & Policy Development: Stakeholders participated in discussions to draft the official charter for government approval.
  • Management Plan & Funding Strategy: Development of concept notes to attract potential funding partners.

A Model for Lebanon’s Future

The Upper Matn Natural Park is set to become Lebanon’s first official Natural Park, serving as a pioneering model for future conservation efforts. With strong community engagement and institutional support, this initiative has the potential to be replicated across different regions, ensuring a more sustainable future for Lebanon’s natural heritage.
