IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025: Powering Transformative Conservation

As the global conservation community prepares for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, the call for collaboration and bold action has never been more urgent. This landmark event will bring together governments, Indigenous peoples’ organizations, businesses, and conservation leaders to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and develop innovative strategies to address today’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Under the theme “Powering Transformative Conservation,” the Congress will serve as a dynamic platform to drive impactful solutions for biodiversity protection, ecosystem restoration, and sustainability efforts worldwide. IUCN, the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, has long been at the forefront of advancing science-based conservation, shaping policies, and catalyzing meaningful change. By building on our collective achievements, we will chart a bold course for the future of nature conservation.

The Congress also marks a pivotal moment for IUCN’s 20-year strategy, which lays out a clear roadmap for achieving long-term conservation goals. Aligning discussions and actions with this vision will ensure that IUCN remains a leading force in driving global environmental progress.

Lebanon at the Forefront of Global Conservation

SPNL’s participation in the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 marks a significant milestone in Lebanon’s journey toward enhanced biodiversity protection, policy development, and community-led conservation initiatives. The organization remains committed to driving impactful action and ensuring that Lebanon plays an active role in shaping the future of global environmental sustainability.

“More than ever, the world is looking to IUCN for leadership,” said Dr. Grethel Aguilar, Director General of IUCN. “This Congress is our moment to reaffirm our commitment to conservation, harness innovation, and amplify the voices of those working tirelessly to safeguard our planet.”

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of IUCN, emphasized the significance of the event: “It is an opportunity to inspire, to learn, and to forge a shared vision for a future where people and nature thrive together. We invite all stakeholders to join us in Abu Dhabi for what promises to be an inspiring and impactful gathering.”

The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 is set to be a milestone event in shaping the future of conservation. We invite you to be part of this global movement from October 9-15, 2025, in Abu Dhabi. Together, let us seize this opportunity to strengthen IUCN’s role as the leading voice for nature.

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
