Exciting news from Hammana’s Hima forests! The Common Linnet (Linaria cannabina), known locally as تفيفيحي, has once again returned to nest at an altitude of 1,870 meters. Every year, from mid-April, this species finds refuge in the region, though its numbers remain limited. In 2022, the highest recorded count was only 14 breeding pairs.
This continued presence of the Common Linnet is no coincidence – it is the result of dedicated conservation efforts led by Chadi Saad, a committed bird expert and field researcher who has played a key role in monitoring, documenting, and protecting Lebanon’s bird species. Through his work with SPNL, Chadi has been at the forefront of ensuring that crucial habitats like Hammana remain safe nesting grounds for migratory and resident birds.
🌿 SPNL’s Role in Protecting Birdlife
✅ Field Monitoring – Tracking bird populations and migration patterns in Hima sites
✅ Community Engagement – Working with local hunters and communities to promote sustainable hunting practices
✅ Reporting Violations – Documenting and reporting illegal hunting to ensure enforcement of conservation laws
✅ Scientific Documentation – Providing critical data to guide conservation policies and habitat management
The return of the Common Linnet reinforces the success of the Hima approach, which promotes community-led conservation. However, illegal hunting and habitat destruction continue to threaten this species and many others.
