SPNL & Lebanese Army’s CIMIC Unit: A New Chapter in Conservation Cooperation

In a pivotal step toward enhancing conservation efforts in Lebanon, André Bechara, representing the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL), met today with General Iyad Alam, head of the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Unit of the Lebanese Army. The meeting focused on future collaboration between SPNL and CIMIC to reinforce nature conservation, counter illegal hunting, and promote sustainable practices in military-managed areas.

Strengthening Collaboration for Nature Protection

The discussions emphasized SPNL’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and its efforts through the “Schools With No Walls” (SWNW) program. This initiative fosters outdoor environmental education by integrating nature-based learning experiences into school curricula, engaging local communities, and raising awareness about conservation. Given the Lebanese Army’s role in national security and community outreach, CIMIC’s involvement presents a valuable opportunity to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices on a broader scale.

Key Topics Discussed:

1️⃣ Combating Illegal Hunting

  • Enhancing joint patrols and enforcement mechanisms in sensitive areas.
  • Strengthening coordination between SPNL’s anti-poaching unit and army personnel.
  • Promoting awareness campaigns targeting hunters and rural communities.

2️⃣ Protecting Key Bird Migration Routes

  • Utilizing military expertise to monitor and safeguard migratory bird corridors.
  • Supporting SPNL’s Hima conservation model, which fosters community-driven stewardship of natural habitats.

3️⃣ Expanding the “Schools With No Walls” Program

  • Partnering with CIMIC to introduce nature education and conservation activities in schools within military-managed regions.
  • Training military personnel to serve as nature ambassadors, guiding youth in outdoor experiential learning.
  • Organizing field trips, biodiversity workshops, and hands-on conservation activities for students in Hima sites.

4️⃣ Disaster Response & Climate Resilience

  • Exploring joint strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change and habitat loss on wildlife.
  • Strengthening the army’s role in disaster response to wildfires, floods, and other environmental threats.

A United Front for Conservation

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in protecting Lebanon’s rich biodiversity. General Alam expressed CIMIC’s support for environmental initiatives, recognizing the Lebanese Army’s role in securing not just the country’s borders, but also its natural heritage.

André Bechara highlighted the importance of bridging conservation and education with security efforts, stating:
“By working with the Lebanese Army, we can expand conservation awareness to new communities and inspire a new generation of environmental stewards through the ‘Schools With No Walls’ program.”

This meeting marks a significant step forward in strengthening the relationship between civil society and security forces to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable education, ensuring that Lebanon’s natural heritage is preserved for future generations.
