Hima Kfarselwan stands as a living example of how people and nature can thrive together. As part of the “Homat Al Hima and Hima Trails” program, implemented by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) in partnership with the Municipality of Kfarselwan and the Jabal El Kanise Adventure Club, the site was recently visited by the SPNL team to document its inspiring story of stewardship and sustainability.
Kfarselwan is not only a landscape of stunning alpine meadows and fresh mountain air—it is a community model built on respect for the land. Here, local shepherds live in harmony with nature, practicing sustainable grazing that preserves vegetation and prevents overuse of pastures. Through this balance, they have become true guardians of biodiversity, protecting both the ecosystem and their cultural heritage.
The local Baladi goats, central to the area’s traditional livelihood, provide high-quality natural dairy products that sustain families while helping maintain open landscapes and reduce wildfire risks. This link between livelihood and conservation illustrates SPNL’s vision for the Hima approach: empowering local people to be the custodians of their own environment.
In Kfarselwan, every shepherd is a protector of nature, every grazing path a part of Lebanon’s living heritage. It is a place where ancient traditions meet modern conservation — where caring for the land is not only an occupation, but a way of life.
