SPNL Participates in ENPI Horizon 2020 Capacity Building Workshop

 

Through SPNL’s work on the national, regional and international level, SPNL was nominated by the ministry of Environment to participate in a regional workshop on sustainable development that was conducted under the ENPI Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme, where it was organized by the Regional Arab Network for Environment and Development- RAED in Egypt, between 5&7 November 2013. The workshop focused on exchanging the experience and knowledge from different Arab countries in relation to sustainable development topics and strategies, where the experience of the Egyptian Forum for Sustainable Development (EFSD),was highlighted as a model for potential replication.

Several topics were introduced during the workshop, where the objectives of Horizon 2020 were pinpointed, including hindering the pollutants that affect the Mediterranean including solid wastes, sewage water and industrial pollution, in which capacity building , policies and strategies to minimize pollution, research, monitoring and evaluation were identified as potential solutions. The forum addressed the issues that hinder sustainable development in different Med countries including Lebanon where a strategy for tackling this issue on the national level was proposed. Where the following strategy could be applicable through the presence of a national forum for sustainable development including all active stakeholders under the patronage of RAED.

The ENPI Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP) aims to support the implementation of the Horizon 2020 Initiative Road Map and Work Plan through capacity building and awareness raising activities, and to promote integration/mainstreaming of environment issues into other sector policies.

It is also responsible for the proper coordination of the H2020 Steering Group and the three Sub-Groups and the overall enhanced visibility of Horizon 2020.
