In a new milestone for regional environmental cooperation, Assaad Serhal, Director of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) and a leading advocate of the Hima community-based conservation model, participated a high-level visit to Amman aimed at deepening ties between Lebanon and Jordan in eco-tourism, heritage protection, and sustainable development. Serhal was accompanied by Fadi Ghanem, Chair of the National Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and President of Ghadi Association, along with H.E. Dr. Taher Al-Shakhshir, former Jordanian Minister of Environment.
The delegation was received by H.E. Dr. Emad Hijazin, Jordan’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, in a meeting that evolved into a deep and forward-looking discussion on how the two countries can interconnect their cultural, historical, and natural heritage within a unified eco-tourism vision. Serhal emphasized SPNL’s pioneering work in Lebanon, particularly through the Hima model, which places local community stewardship at the heart of conservation. Discussions highlighted the potential to create cross-border eco-trails, build shared heritage-nature experiences, and involve local and indigenous communities to ensure sustainability and equitable benefit-sharing.
Minister Hijazin welcomed the Lebanese delegation with great openness, reaffirming Jordan’s readiness to strengthen cooperation, exchange expertise, and advance a shared agenda for regionally connected eco-tourism and heritage protection.
A Dynamic Follow-Up: Deepening Environmental Partnerships
As part of the series of productive engagements in Jordan, the delegation, led by Serhal, also met with H.E. Dr. Ayman Suleiman, Jordan’s dynamic and forward-thinking Minister of Environment. The meeting carried energy, vision, and a strong sense of alignment on environmental priorities.
This encounter marked another important step in the rapidly growing cooperation between Lebanon and Jordan, particularly in linking natural identity with cultural heritage and developing joint initiatives in conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable development. Serhal and the delegation expressed deep appreciation for Minister Suleiman’s warm reception and constructive insights, noting his strong understanding of how heritage and environment must advance together in shaping a more sustainable future.
Discussions pointed toward promising joint projects, grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to elevating the region’s environmental and cultural significance. The message was clear: the best is yet to come.
A Journey Through Time: A Special Visit to Jabal Al-Qal’a
Beyond the official meetings, the visit included a memorable tour of Jabal Al-Qal’a, one of Amman’s seven historic hills, where Serhal, Ghanem, and Dr. Al-Shakhshir explored one of the region’s most iconic archaeological sites. From the ancient Ammonite citadel to the layers of Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine history, the hill offered a powerful reminder of the civilizations that shaped the eastern Mediterranean.
Walking through its timeless ruins, the delegation experienced a living dialogue between past and present — a reminder of the deep cultural foundations that complement the natural landscapes SPNL works to protect. Jabal Al-Qal’a, with its sweeping views and rich heritage, stood as a testament to Amman’s enduring identity.
The delegation extended heartfelt thanks for the inspiring company and for Amman’s generosity in sharing its stories, warmth, and history.
A Symbolic Conclusion
To honor the collaboration and Jordan’s commitment to heritage and nature, Fadi Ghanem presented a commemorative shield to Minister Hijazin. The gesture reflected the shared dedication of both countries to building a future where natural and cultural heritage move hand in hand.
With SPNL’s leadership, strengthened partnerships, and a shared regional vision, Lebanon and Jordan are well-positioned to develop innovative eco-tourism pathways and conservation models that celebrate their landscapes, safeguard their identities, and empower their communities.
