Today, the Fish & Wildlife Unit conducted a field patrol on Qaraoun Lake as part of its ongoing efforts to monitor water quality, assess biodiversity changes, and evaluate the overall ecological status of the lake. This patrol aligns with the unit’s mission to ensure sustainable conservation practices and mitigate the environmental challenges facing the lake.
Observations and Violations
During the patrol, the team conducted a thorough inspection of the lake’s water levels and surrounding habitat. A significant concern was raised upon witnessing seven flocks of sheep drinking and grazing within the lake basin. This poses a serious health risk, as the water and vegetation in the area are contaminated with harmful bacteria. Livestock consuming this polluted water and grass are at high risk of poisoning, which in turn endangers public health—anyone consuming their meat or milk may be exposed to dangerous pathogens, potentially leading to severe illnesses.
This practice is strictly prohibited under environmental regulations established through a joint collaboration between the Fish & Wildlife Unit, the Litani River Authority (LRA), and the Ministry of Interior (MOI). These regulations aim to prevent pollution, protect aquatic life, and sustain the lake’s ecosystem, which is already under immense pressure from climate change and human-induced activities.
Immediate Action and Enforcement
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Fish & Wildlife Unit immediately alerted the Competent Security Authorities to take the necessary enforcement measures. The unit emphasized the importance of strict compliance with environmental laws and conservation guidelines to prevent further degradation of the lake.
Additionally, the unit will continue its collaborative efforts with LRA, MOI, and local stakeholders to implement stricter monitoring and raise awareness among livestock owners and farmers about the long-term consequences of violating these regulations.
Commitment to Conservation and Awareness
Beyond enforcement, the Fish & Wildlife Unit is dedicated to community engagement and awareness-building. Future steps will include:
- Conducting awareness campaigns to educate local herders and farmers on the risks of livestock access to the lake basin.
- Strengthening patrols and surveillance measures in partnership with relevant authorities to ensure adherence to environmental laws.
- Encouraging sustainable alternatives for livestock watering and grazing to reduce pressure on Qaraoun Lake’s fragile ecosystem.
The Fish & Wildlife Unit remains steadfast in its mission to protect Qaraoun Lake, advocating for responsible practices that support biodiversity conservation, water resource management, and ecosystem resilience.
