From Rivers to Forests: SPNL’s Fight for Wildlife Conservation

The Fish & Wildlife Unit is a specialized division within the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) dedicated to the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of Lebanon’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It plays a vital role in monitoring water quality, restoring habitats, promoting biodiversity conservation, and raising environmental awareness.

Through scientific research, training programs, and community engagement, the unit tackles key environmental issues such as water pollution, habitat degradation, and overexploitation of natural resources. By working directly with farmers, fishermen, local communities, and policymakers, the unit promotes sustainable solutions to safeguard Lebanon’s freshwater and wildlife resources for future generations.

Key Areas of Focus:

1. Environmental Monitoring & Water Testing

🔹 Conducts regular water quality assessments in collaboration with the Litani River Authority (LRA) to track pollution trends.
🔹 Monitors ecological changes in Qaraoun Lake, identifying contaminants, pollutants, and sources of environmental degradation.
🔹 Develops scientific reports and recommendations to guide water management policies.

2. Training & Awareness Programs

Municipal Awareness Campaigns

  • Partners with municipalities and local authorities to educate communities on water pollution, waste management, and sustainable water use.
  • Organizes workshops and awareness sessions to promote waste reduction, conservation ethics, and ecosystem restoration.

Training for Farmers & Fishermen

  • Works with farmers to reduce chemical pollution by promoting eco-friendly agricultural practices and organic farming.
  • Encourages fishermen to adopt sustainable fishing techniques, preventing overfishing and protecting aquatic biodiversity.
  • Explores alternative, environmentally friendly fishing methods in Qaraoun Lake, reducing harm to aquatic life and ensuring long-term sustainability.

School & Youth Engagement

  • Implements interactive educational programs in schools and youth centers to instill environmental values in younger generations.
  • Engages students in hands-on conservation activities, such as river cleanups, biodiversity monitoring, and wildlife rescue efforts.

3. Public Advocacy & Conservation Policy

📢 Environmental Awareness Campaigns

  • Conducts national and local campaigns highlighting the dangers of water pollution, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss.
  • Uses social media, community events, and media outreach to spread awareness and promote eco-friendly behaviors.
  • Engages with government agencies and NGOs to advocate for stronger environmental policies and enforcement of conservation laws.

4. Habitat Restoration & Conservation Projects

🌱 Restoring Degraded Ecosystems

  • Supports efforts to rehabilitate polluted water bodies, wetlands, and degraded habitats.
  • Implements reforestation and rewilding initiatives around key freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

🐟 Protecting Lebanon’s Freshwater Biodiversity

  • Works on conserving native fish species and restoring their habitats.
  • Studies endangered aquatic and semi-aquatic species, ensuring their long-term survival.

By integrating science, education, and advocacy, the SPNL Fish & Wildlife Unit contributes to a healthier environment, improved water quality, and long-term ecological balance—ensuring that Lebanon’s natural heritage thrives for generations to come.
