A Mission to Protect Nature
Deep in the forests of Lebanon, where majestic birds soar and delicate ecosystems thrive, a silent battle is taking place. Armed with passion, commitment, and expertise, the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) is leading the charge against illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking.
Since its establishment, the APU has worked tirelessly to combat the threats posed by poaching, habitat destruction, and the illegal bird trade. From conducting field patrols and rescue missions to raising awareness and training local communities, their work is a crucial element in protecting Lebanon’s rich biodiversity.
A Month of Action: January–February 2025
The past month has been particularly eventful for the APU, with multiple operations, educational initiatives, and strategic partnerships shaping the future of conservation in Lebanon.
Empowering Hunters and Civil Defense in Anti-Poaching Efforts
On January 24, SPNL and the APU participated in the Hima Forum annual celebration in Ras El Matn, a key event bringing together conservationists, policymakers, and local stakeholders. During the event, a special anti-poaching lecture was held for hunters and Civil Defense personnel, with participation from ACE Association activists. The session emphasized the ecological impact of poaching, sustainable hunting alternatives, and the role of local communities in wildlife protection. The event also saw the Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin, honored by SPNL, reinforcing governmental commitment to environmental protection.
Field Patrols and Investigations
Protecting Lebanon’s biodiversity requires constant vigilance. The APU conducted multiple field patrols and investigations, responding to reports of illegal activity and preparing for upcoming conservation efforts.
- January 25: APU patrols were deployed in Aghbe, Chabtoul, and the Jabal Moussa Reserve entrance (Qehmez side) to monitor wildlife activity and inspect for illegal traps.
- January 31: A broader sweep was conducted in Beit Mery, Broummana, Mar Moussa, Kaakour, Khillet, Mtein, and Meshikha in preparation for the Spring Camp with CAPS.
- February 8: The unit responded to reports of a Golden Eagle trapped in a Jal El Dib building complex, mobilizing a rescue team to assess and secure the bird.
- February 12: APU successfully rescued and released the Golden Eagle, marking a major victory for wildlife rehabilitation in Lebanon.
Building a Stronger Conservation Force
The APU’s impact extends beyond field operations. One of the key focuses this year has been expanding and training its volunteer base.
- February 6: APU met with new volunteers from the Metn region, including members of the security forces, to discuss collaboration and schedule training sessions.
- February 13: APU engaged with volunteers in Zgharta and conducted a field inspection in Amioun, an area where previous illegal bird-netting operations had been dismantled.
- February 17: In an effort to tackle illegal bird trade, APU conducted raids on bird markets in Northern Metn, specifically targeting the sale of European Goldfinches, a species under threat due to excessive poaching.
Educating the Next Generation
Raising awareness is a fundamental pillar of SPNL’s conservation strategy. The APU has been actively engaging schools, universities, and local organizations to educate youth about anti-poaching, bird conservation, and sustainable hunting practices.
- February 16: Coordination began with Saghbine Public High School (West Bekaa) for an awareness lecture scheduled on March 3.
- February 17: Additional outreach efforts targeted a West Bekaa school for an event on March 4.
- February 21: APU finalized plans with Antonine School Zahle for a February 27 meeting, which will pave the way for a series of environmental education lectures.
- Ongoing Efforts: Coordination with Antonine University Zahle for an April 4, 2025 lecture and field training session.
Strategic Planning for the Future
To ensure long-term impact, APU has begun drafting a comprehensive strategy for anti-poaching operations, with guidance from Marwan Lahoud, a former UNICEF advisor. This strategy will focus on expanding partnerships, enhancing enforcement mechanisms, and integrating conservation education into national curricula.
