Hima Abadiyeh

Abadiyeh (Arabic: العبادية; also spelled al-Abadiyah or Aabadiyeh) is a picturesque mountain town in the Baabda District of the Mount Lebanon Governorate, just 16 kilometers east of Beirut. Nestled at an average elevation of 780 meters above sea level and spanning 916 hectares, Abadiyeh lies among notable neighboring towns such as Chouit, Beit Mery, Ras el-Matn, el-Halaliyeh, Baalchemay, Aley, and Ain el-Jdeide.

On February 15, 2024, the town proudly declared the creation of Hima Abadiyeh, a community-based conservation area that has become an integral part of the Higher Matn Natural Park Initiative—a bold regional vision to unify natural heritage protection under a sustainable framework.

🌿 Hima Abadiyeh: A Model of Sustainable Stewardship

The Hima approach is rooted in indigenous knowledge and community participation, empowering locals to manage their ecosystems with care and accountability. This locally-driven model ensures that conservation isn’t imposed from above but emerges from the very people who depend on the land.

Now, Hima Abadiyeh plays a vital role in a broader landscape conservation vision through the Higher Matn Natural Park Initiative. Spearheaded by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) in cooperation with local municipalities, this initiative seeks to preserve ecological richness while supporting sustainable development in the region.

📜 A Unified Charter, A Shared Vision

SPNL and the partner municipalities collaboratively developed a charter outlining the park’s:

  • Objectives: to protect biodiversity and natural landscapes

  • Working areas: spanning ecological, cultural, and economic dimensions

  • Vision & Mission: promoting harmony between people and nature through sustainable, community-led conservation

This charter has been officially endorsed by Lebanon’s Ministry of Environment (MOE)—marking a significant step forward in institutional support for nature protection in Mount Lebanon.

A new phase of collaboration is set to begin:

  • A comprehensive management plan will be developed, complete with a dedicated budget to ensure the park’s long-term sustainability.

  • Awareness campaigns will intensify to highlight the ecological importance, goals, and mission of the Higher Matn Natural Park.

  • These efforts aim to attract donor support, build community ownership, and establish the park as a beacon of conservation excellence in Lebanon.

🌸 A Valley Worth Discovering

More than just a scenic destination, Hima Abadiyeh is a living example of how tradition and modern conservation can come together to safeguard the future. Visitors are invited to explore its trails, observe its rich biodiversity, and experience firsthand the resilience of nature—protected by its own people.

Abadiyeh’s green valley is now part of a larger dream: a network of Hima sites united under one park, with one shared mission—to let nature and people thrive, side by side.

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
