Hima Hammana: A Snowy Haven for Ski Tourism in Mount Lebanon

Nestled at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, the picturesque village of Hammana in the Baabda district of Mount Lebanon transforms into a winter wonderland during the snowy season. With its breathtaking landscapes, pristine white slopes, and crisp mountain air, Hammana offers a unique ski tourism experience that blends adventure with nature conservation.

As part of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon’s (SPNL) ongoing efforts to promote eco-tourism through the Hima approach, a group of nature enthusiasts recently embarked on a captivating journey through Hammana’s snow-covered trails. Their adventure led them to Jabal El Knisse, a renowned hiking destination in the nearby village of Falougha-Khalouat. Among the participants were nature lovers and adventurers such as Andre Bechara, Louis Junior Saad, and others, all eager to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lebanon’s high-altitude landscapes.

The day began with a guided trek through Hammana’s vast snowfields, where participants explored the diverse winter ecology of the region. Blanketed in snow, the Hima Hammana landscape was a breathtaking sight, with its towering rugged cliffs providing the perfect backdrop for a sustainable tourism experience. The air was filled with the crisp scent of pine, and the silence of the mountains was occasionally broken by the call of birds that inhabit this conserved natural habitat.

For many, the highlight of the trip was the opportunity to experience ski tourism at its finest. The panoramic views of Mount Lebanon, with its snow-capped peaks and winding trails, offered an unparalleled spectacle, making the adventure both thrilling and serene.

Beyond the adventure, the trip also aimed to highlight the importance of nature conservation through SPNL’s Hima initiative. By engaging in eco-friendly tourism activities, participants gained a deeper appreciation for Lebanon’s natural heritage and the role that local communities play in preserving it. Hammana’s Hima model serves as a shining example of how sustainable tourism can coexist with environmental protection, benefiting both nature and local livelihoods.

As the sun set over the snow-covered hills, the group gathered to reflect on their experience, sharing stories and warm drinks in the heart of Hammana’s welcoming community. The trip was not just about adventure; it was a testament to the beauty and resilience of Lebanon’s natural landscapes and the power of conservation efforts to keep them thriving.

Hima Hammana remains a beacon for those seeking an escape into nature, offering a blend of adventure, heritage, and conservation. As Lebanon continues to embrace eco-tourism, such experiences will ensure that its breathtaking landscapes are cherished and protected for generations to come.
