Lala Municipality Recognized as a New Hima Site in Lebanon

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) proudly announced today the official designation of Lala Municipality as a Hima site, recognizing its commitment to nature conservation, community engagement, and sustainable resource management.

The Hima Certificate was awarded to Lala in appreciation of its dedication to protecting biodiversity, addressing climate change, and promoting responsible stewardship of Lebanon’s natural heritage.

Through this recognition, SPNL affirms its long-standing vision of reviving the traditional Hima system — a community-based approach to conservation that dates back more than 1,500 years. The Hima model empowers local municipalities and communities to safeguard their natural landscapes while fostering sustainable livelihoods, youth engagement, and peaceful coexistence.

“With the commitment of Lala Municipality, we are taking another step toward strengthening Lebanon’s network of Hima sites,” said Assad Serhal, General Director of SPNL. “The Hima system is not only about conserving species and habitats, but also about improving people’s lives, building climate resilience, and uniting communities around shared values of respect for nature.”

Located in the heart of the Bekaa region, Hima Lala will contribute to protecting local ecosystems, supporting ecotourism opportunities, and inspiring youth to participate in environmental education programs. This initiative also strengthens Lebanon’s position within global conservation efforts, demonstrating how local action can contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
