Seven Green Projects for the Hima Mount Lebanon Center: Green Design at MUBS University

The Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Modern University for Business and Science (MUBS) organized the 2024 Green Interior Design Competition in collaboration with the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL). The competition results were announced during a ceremony held at the university’s Aley campus.

The competition focused on designing a second floor for the Hima Mount Lebanon Center in Kayfoun, which would include bedrooms, a breakfast area, and spaces for relaxation and observation. Students worked individually or in groups under the supervision of professors Loubna Malaaeb, Youssef Al-Saifi, and Dr. Jamal Malaaeb. Seven student teams presented their innovative green design concepts:

  • Sustainable Parametric Design:
By Razan Ayash, Yara Abdel Samad, Mariam Saydani, Rola Abou Chakra, and Dareen Araoui.
This project integrates eco-friendly water, electricity, and waste management systems with a modern parametric design approach. It won first place in the competition.
  • Urban Jungle:
By Sandy Ghallab, Razan Safa, and Ruba Abi Saeed.
Inspired by SPNL’s role in bird conservation, this design featured floating furniture to evoke a sense of flight and freedom.
  • Tropical Project:
By Ruba Mneim, Aya Al-Taqi, and Fadia Ali.
This design blurred the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a serene and colorful environment enriched with tropical materials. It secured second place in the competition.
  • Biophilic Design:
By Razan Abi Al-Mona, Sahar Nasr Al-Din, and Malak Al-Areedhi.
The core concept of this project was to combine technology, sustainability, and natural environments using eco-friendly design, materials, and performance strategies.
  • Balance of Nature:
By Aline Abi Al-Mona, Nourshan Nasser, and Hanan Rafea.
This project explored the interaction of water, fire, and wind, creating a refreshing and tranquil space.
  • Environmental Flow:
    By Doaa Munther.
Using natural materials such as wood and plants, this project created an eco-friendly structure that seamlessly blends into Kayfoun’s green landscape.
  • Green Walls:
    By Yara Al-Kaak.
Featuring living green walls, this project provided fresh greenery and plant benefits while minimizing horizontal space usage.

During the ceremony, Engineer Assad Serhal, Director General of SPNL, expressed his pride in collaborating with MUBS and his admiration for the student projects. He encouraged students to believe in themselves and in Lebanon, working together for a better future.

SPNL awarded cash prizes to the first and second-place winners and presented certificates to all participating students.

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
