SPNL’s Revival of the Al-Hima System Recognized by United Nations Women’s Fund for Gender Equality as a Model for Women’s Empowerment

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) proudly announces that the United Nations Women’s Fund for Gender Equality has recognized the Al-Hima System, revived by SPNL, as a groundbreaking model for women’s empowerment. This prestigious recognition was awarded at the First Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo held in 2014.

The First Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo was held from February 18 to 20, 2014, in Doha, Qatar. Hosted by the State of Qatar, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation co-organized the Expo and the United Nations Development Programme Regional Bureau for Arab States.

Under the motto “Solutions to Action,” the Expo aimed to showcase and scale up successful, evidence-based development solutions from the Global South. It provided a platform for countries to share experiences and best practices in addressing development challenges, fostering collaboration among nations in the Arab States region.

The event featured high-level discussions, solution exchange forums, and networking sessions, facilitating partnerships and knowledge sharing among governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders.

The Expo underscored the importance of South-South cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals and addressing common regional issues.

The Al-Hima System, a centuries-old community-based conservation practice, has been reintroduced by SPNL as a sustainable model for managing natural resources while empowering local communities. The revival of the Hima emphasizes inclusive participation, especially of women, in decision-making processes and resource management, aligning with global goals for gender equality and sustainable development.

This recognition by the United Nations Women’s Fund for Gender Equality highlights the transformative impact of the Hima system in addressing gender disparities, fostering social cohesion, and promoting economic opportunities for women in rural areas. By providing a platform for women to lead conservation efforts, the Hima model strengthens their roles as environmental stewards and community leaders.

Mr. Assad Serhal,  Director General at SPNL, expressed pride in this international acknowledgment: “The recognition of the Al-Hima System as a model for women’s empowerment by the United Nations Women’s Fund for Gender Equality is a testament to the enduring power of community-based conservation. It underscores the vital role women play in safeguarding nature and ensuring the sustainability of our shared resources.”

The First Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo provided a unique platform to showcase innovative and scalable solutions from across the region. SPNL’s revival of the Al-Hima System stood out as a pioneering initiative, illustrating how traditional practices can be adapted to modern challenges to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.

SPNL remains committed to furthering the principles of the Hima, ensuring that conservation efforts continue to empower women, preserve biodiversity, and support the sustainable development of communities across Lebanon and beyond.

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
