These are the birds around the world impacted by avian flu

Two years ago we started emerging from the most devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. As we moved on, another pandemic has been wreaking havoc on wild bird populations around the world.

It’s known as H5N1 and it’s a deadly strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

From January 2022 to October 2023, 80 countries reported 17,000 outbreaks in wild birds and mammals. This number is considered a gross underestimate.

Avian influenza is one of the largest ecological disasters in modern times.

The increasingly devastating deaths from avian flu is evidenced by these startling global numbers since our last report, a year ago.

Our wildlife is already under extreme pressure and avian flu is threatening our birds like never before, making our mission more critical than ever.

Please keep an eye out for an upcoming post that will explain all the hard work being done to help birds through avian flu.

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
