Two years ago we started emerging from the most devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. As we moved on, another pandemic has been wreaking havoc on wild bird populations around the world.
It’s known as H5N1 and it’s a deadly strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
From January 2022 to October 2023, 80 countries reported 17,000 outbreaks in wild birds and mammals. This number is considered a gross underestimate.
Avian influenza is one of the largest ecological disasters in modern times.
The increasingly devastating deaths from avian flu is evidenced by these startling global numbers since our last report, a year ago.
Our wildlife is already under extreme pressure and avian flu is threatening our birds like never before, making our mission more critical than ever.
