In a powerful 60-second pitch, Raghida Haddad, Editor in Chief of Al Hima environmental magazine, addressed nearly 500 delegates from 124 countries gathered at the BirdLife Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, from 9 to 11 September:
Hima is a 4,000-year-old community-based conservation system revived in Lebanon by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL).
Today, Lebanon has 65 Himas protecting around 7% of the country’s territory and contributing to the global 30×30 target.
SPNL’s new mission is Hima for Peace.
If we fail to make peace with nature, climate change and extinction rates will continue to rise. One in every eight bird species is threatened with extinction.
If we respect birds, wildlife and nature, we can also learn to respect one another and reject violence.
This is a message from the Middle East—coming from the heart of war.
