An educational visit under SPNL’s PROZHUM project, funded by AFD, brought young people into the field to learn about birds, wetland habitats and responsible conservation.
Protecting birds begins with noticing them—and understanding why they matter. On 17 October 2026, a group of Homat al Hima youth from Hima Anjar joined the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon’s (SPNL) avifauna expert for an educational visit to Ammiq Wetland.
Organized under SPNL’s PROZHUM project, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), the two-and-a-half-hour activity gave participants the opportunity to observe birds and other wildlife while discussing the importance of protecting their habitats.
Learning Through Observation
The visit connected conservation discussions with wildlife that participants could observe around them. Guided by SPNL’s expert, the group explored the wetland and learned about birds, their roles in nature and the importance of safeguarding the habitats on which they depend.
Field observation made these discussions tangible, encouraging participants to look more closely at their surroundings and consider how their actions can contribute to wildlife protection.
Understanding Hunting Laws
Hunting laws were another important focus of the visit. Participants discussed how respecting these laws contributes to bird protection, alongside the role of awareness and responsible behaviour in conserving wildlife.
The discussion linked an appreciation of birds with a practical responsibility to protect them.
Connecting Anjar and Ammiq
For young people from Anjar—a community that is itself home to an important wetland—the visit offered an opportunity to explore another wetland and reflect on their shared responsibility to care for these habitats.
The activity reflects the spirit of Homat al Hima: helping young people strengthen their connection with nature and take an active role in its protection. Through observation, discussion and shared experience, the participants connected what they learned at Ammiq with the landscapes they know at home.
