SPNL Empowers Local Communities through Nature-Based Solutions and Hima Awareness under the Al Murunah and Al Murunah+ Projects

Under the Al Murunah and Al Murunah+ projects, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) reaffirmed its commitment to empowering local communities through targeted awareness and capacity-building sessions focused on sustainability and resilience.

On 10 and 11 October 2025, the SPNL team conducted a series of interactive training sessions introducing participants to the core background, achievements, and upcoming steps of the Al Murunah project. A central theme of the sessions was the application of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) as practical and sustainable responses to Lebanon’s growing climate and water challenges.

An integral component of the training was the introduction of the Hima concept and its associated community programs, emphasizing its role as a locally rooted, community-driven model for environmental stewardship and resilience building.

The sessions were organized across four villages — Ras Baalbek, Qaa, Fekha, and Arsal — and successfully engaged around 200 participants representing various community groups, local authorities, and youth leaders.

Feedback gathered during and after the sessions reflected a significant increase in environmental awareness and technical understanding. Pre- and post-assessment forms confirmed this progress, demonstrating clear improvement in participants’ grasp of key sustainability and conservation concepts.

Through these initiatives, SPNL continues to bridge scientific knowledge with local action, empowering communities to become active agents of change for a greener and more resilient Lebanon.
