The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) participated in a heritage and environmental walking event in Bchamoun, represented by Hamada Malaeb, Manager of the Hima Trails Programme. The activity was organized at the invitation of Bchamoun Sports Club and the “Nature Brings Us Together” group, and was attended by the Mayor of Bchamoun and members of the Municipal Council.
The event brought together residents, hikers, and nature enthusiasts for a journey through the historic neighborhoods of Bchamoun, highlighting the village’s rich architectural, cultural, and environmental heritage. Participants explored centuries-old streets, traditional alleyways, and historic landmarks that reflect the identity and history of the town while emphasizing the importance of preserving its cultural legacy.
The walk also underscored the value of revitalizing heritage pathways as accessible hiking trails that connect people with nature and local history. Such initiatives contribute to sustainable tourism, encourage visitors to discover Bchamoun’s unique natural and cultural assets, and support local economic development while safeguarding the village’s architectural heritage for future generations.
The activity reflects the growing collaboration between local authorities, community groups, and environmental organizations to promote sustainable development through nature-based and cultural tourism. It also aligns with SPNL’s vision for the Hima Trails initiative, which seeks to revive traditional pathways as community-managed routes that protect biodiversity, celebrate cultural heritage, and strengthen the relationship between people, nature, and place.
Through the Hima Trails programme, SPNL continues to work with municipalities and local communities across Lebanon to transform traditional trails into living landscapes that foster conservation, community engagement, and sustainable livelihoods while preserving the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
