The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL), in collaboration with Terre des hommes (Tdh), organized an environmental education and training day at Hima Bayssour and Hima Ras El Matn under its School with No Walls (SNOW) programme, bringing students closer to nature through learning beyond the classroom.
The activity took place within the framework of the summer support programme for public-school students, held at the Teacher Training Centre in Aley. It connected educational support with environmental awareness, offering students an opportunity to explore the relationship between their learning, their communities, and the natural world.
The training day introduced students to the Hima approach—a community-based conservation model rooted in local heritage that connects biodiversity protection with the responsible management of natural resources and the well-being of surrounding communities.
Through the SNOW approach, natural spaces become living classrooms where observation, exploration, and firsthand experience help students understand the importance of protecting their environment. This educational model encourages curiosity, shared responsibility, and a stronger connection to the land.
Holding the activity at Hima Bayssour and Hima Ras El Matn brought together two complementary priorities: supporting students’ learning and nurturing environmental citizenship. It also highlighted the educational value of Hima sites as places where young people can discover how communities contribute to conserving nature.
The collaboration between SPNL and Tdh provided an opportunity to connect learning and children’s engagement with environmental stewardship. By bringing students into direct contact with nature, the initiative encouraged them to see themselves as active participants in protecting their surroundings.
The activity reflects SPNL’s commitment to engaging younger generations in conservation and strengthening connections between schools, communities, and Lebanon’s natural heritage. Through its School with No Walls programme, SPNL seeks to turn environmental awareness into lasting knowledge and everyday responsibility.
