As part of Birdlife’s International 90th anniversary celebrations that will be held this June in Canada, Birdlife chose 20 of their most successful stories achieved since their establishment. Amongst these achievements is SPNL’s “Al- Hima” approach that was revived starting2004 in Lebanon, and boosted by the Hima Fund, a generous donation by the State of Qatar in 2008. Al Hima approach which promotes the conservation of nature and the sustainable use of its resources via community based management and local traditions, is currently being implemented in seven sites all over Lebanon, with more sites to be declared as Himas in the near future.
This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
