At the Heart of the Hima… Turtles Return to Freedom

Under the patronage of the Municipality of Qarnael, and upon the invitation of the Qarnael Women’s Association, with the participation of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) and through the BioConnect Aside Event, a special environmental activity was held in Qarnael Hima, where a group of native tortoises were released back into the wild.

This event reflects a shared vision for promoting biodiversity conservation by returning wildlife to their natural habitats—an essential step in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources in the region. It also served as an engaging experience for locals and visitors, who gained insight into the role of the Hima approach as a successful model of collaboration between local communities, municipalities, and environmental organizations.

Far more than just a turtle release, this initiative sent a clear message: the protection of nature and wildlife is a shared responsibility, requiring cooperation and coordination among various stakeholders to ensure a healthier, more balanced future for generations to come.

SPNL, through its long-standing Hima program, continues to emphasize community-based conservation and environmental education. Events like these align with SPNL’s mission to restore and sustain Lebanon’s natural heritage, bridging traditional stewardship values with modern conservation strategies.
