Field Guide to the Soaring Birds in Lebanon
Lebanon has been characterized as a ‘bottleneck’ site, as it lies on one of the most important flyways for migratory soaring birds (MSBs) in the world. Significant numbers of MSBs, over a million, many of which are globally threatened, fly through this corridor migrating back and forth each spring and autumn, from Europe and Asia, where they breed, to winter in Africa.
This book “Migratory Soaring Birds in Lebanon Field Guide” is an achievement for birds and biodiversity in Lebanon. It collates all relevant data on migratory soaring birds, helping bird watchers to differentiate between the various species.
Birdlife International 50th Council meeting in Ecuador
BirdLife International, a global partnership of conservation organisations, had a successful meeting in Ecuador. Specifically, it was the 50th Global Council meeting, hosted by Aves y Conservación, one of Birdlife 120 National Partner around the Globe. The Council meeting, which is held every six month, is the main governance body for BirdLife International. The members of BirdLife, together with key stakeholders and supporters, come together to discuss and adopt a common framework and strategy with priorities for bird conservation.
What BirdLife wants from Climate Change negotiations in Lima ?The 20th Conference of the Parties (COP20) in Lima provides an opportunity for governments to work together to address this global challenge, and to respond to the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide who took to the streets in September, marching for climate action.
BirdLife International’s Asks for Lima
SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) targets to improve energy efficiency, so as to cut global energy demand. This will be fundamental to achieving climate targets whilst operating safely within environmental limits.
Core social and environmental principles (e.g. human rights-based and ecosystem approaches) to govern all climate action.
Hundreds of important sites for nature threatened with destruction
More than 350 of the planet’s most important sites for nature are threatened with being lost forever according to a new report by BirdLife International.
BirdLife’s four decades of work on this is excellent analysis for underpinning species protection. The 12,000 IBAs are the largest global network of key sites for protecting birds, other animals and plants.”
This edition of Al-Hima is published amid conflict and displacement—a painful reality Lebanon knows well. Yet, the Lebanese people and SPNL remain resilient, supporting displaced families while advancing environmental and development goals.
