Safe Passage For Migratory Birds

Migration can only be mastered if the birds find safe resting places along their route where they can find food and recover their strength. However, indiscriminate hunting drives birds to struggle amid unsustainable conditions. Even through rough weather, our responsible hunters answered the call of SPNL, and the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) of the Middle East Center for Sustainable Hunting (MESHC) to work together to make of Ighbe a safe corridor for migratory soaring birds.

As, Eghbe lies along the Eastern Mediterranean flyway of soaring birds that pass over Lebanon, the hunters from this region pledged to protect this migratory corridor and fight illegal hunting.

Illegal killing of birds has been reduced by 85% in Ighbe, through the awareness campaigns by SPNL and MESHC and in cooperation with municipal authorities and sustainable hunters.

Let’s not forget that Lebanon lies on one of the world’s most important migration routes between Europe & Asia downward to Africa in Autumn, and backwards in spring. More than 400 species have been recorded in Lebanon, including 37 species of migratory soaring birds that passes twice over Lebanon (SOURCE: SPNL, June 2020)

The protection of soaring birds is part of the Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) project funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF), and the anti-poaching project funded by the MAVA.
