Fifth Hima Fund Board Meeting in Doha- Qatar

Fifth Hima Fund Board Meeting was held in Doha – Qatar during the period 19-21 April 2015 at the Friends of The Environment Center – the Partner representing the funder & host country.

It was attended for the first time by the new Birdlife International Chief Executive (Mrs Patricia Zurita) as member of the HF Board.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Saif Alhajari , and the board members Birdlife CEO Patricia Zurita , Birdlife ME Director Ibrahim Khader , Assad Serhal – Lebanon, Saeed AlKhauzai – Bahrain , and Elsadiq Bashir HF coordinator.

SPNL’s Director General and BirdLife International special envoy to the GCC, Assad Serhal participated in the meeting representing SPNL.

The meeting focused on the achievements of the Hima Fund so far, plans and proposals for the year 2015-2016, Status Report by HF Coordinator, Review of Previous Projects & recommendations by the Head of Technical Committee, Role & Responsibility of HF Board by Chair & Head of TC, MOU with BL on Fundraising by Assad Serhal & Regional Director of BirdLife-Middle  East , Ibrahim Khader.

The Hima Fund is established to provide grants to conserve Important Bird Areas in the Middle East.

This is a regional fund aimed at supporting conservation of the network of sites important for the survival of birds which depend on them. The fund is focused on using the Hima traditional approach as a model to conserve sites, using the BirdLife partnership to promote and implement the concept. It is open for partners and other national institutions that are willing to coordinate and work collaboratively with BirdLife partners to apply this approach.

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
