SPNL and Kon Fares Promote Wetland Conservation through Birdwatching in West Bekaa

As part of the AFD-funded PROZHUM project, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues to strengthen grassroots environmental action through mentorship support to local civil society organizations.

Under this initiative, SPNL has been mentoring the local CSO Kon Fares, providing technical knowledge and practical tools to support sustainable wetland conservation in West Bekaa, with a particular focus on Lake Qaraoun.

The mentorship program aimed to build the technical and organizational capacities of Kon Fares, enabling the organization to independently lead future environmental initiatives and promote stronger local ownership of natural resource conservation.

Putting this knowledge into action, Kon Fares recently organized a birdwatching event in collaboration with SPNL near Lake Qaraoun and Lake Mansoura. The activity was guided by SPNL bird expert Chadi Saad, who introduced participants to the rich birdlife that depends on these vital wetland habitats.

Participants observed different bird species while learning about the ecological importance of wetlands as critical resting, feeding, and breeding grounds along migratory routes. The event also shed light on the growing environmental pressures facing these ecosystems, including pollution, habitat degradation, and unsustainable practices that threaten biodiversity.

This activity reflects the broader vision of the PROZHUM project: creating lasting environmental impact by empowering local actors to become champions of conservation within their own communities.
