The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA), announced the inclusion of Lebanon’s Shouf Biosphere Reserve in the prestigious IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. This marks a significant achievement for Lebanon, showcasing its commitment to conservation excellence and sustainable development.
Shouf Biosphere Reserve: A Jewel of Lebanon
The Shouf Biosphere Reserve, established in 1996, spans 50,000 hectares across central Lebanon, from Dahr Al-Baidar to the Niha Mountains. It includes the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, 22 surrounding villages, and the Ramsar-designated Ammiq Wetland, one of the last remaining wetlands in the region.
The reserve is home to:
- 520 plant species, including 25 classified as threatened.
- Diverse wildlife, including large mammals like the grey wolf and jungle cat.
The Shouf Biosphere Reserve not only protects Lebanon’s natural heritage but also supports sustainable tourism and local livelihoods, making it a vital pillar of the country’s ecological and socio-economic resilience.
What the Green List Certification Means
The IUCN Green List represents the highest global standard for conservation, recognizing areas that demonstrate:
- Equitable governance, ensuring community involvement.
- Effective management, achieving tangible outcomes for nature and people.
This certification affirms that the Shouf Biosphere Reserve meets these benchmarks, positioning it as a model for protected area management in the region.
Contributions to Global Biodiversity Goals
By earning a place on the Green List, the Shouf Biosphere Reserve contributes to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 3, which aims to effectively conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030. Lebanon’s efforts reflect its dedication to advancing global biodiversity objectives while preserving its unique natural and cultural heritage.
