Palm Frond Weaving

Umm Humaid Al Mansoori

I have loved weaving with palm fronds since I was a child, watching my family practice this traditional craft. I later took it up myself, although my production was limited while I was busy raising my children. Once they had grown up, palm frond weaving became my source of income.

We collect the fronds from the mother palm tree, dry them, and weave them into traditional handicrafts such as baskets, mats, roofing panels, hats, fans, and various household items. The fronds are used either in their natural pale-yellow color or dyed in different colors.

I do my best to produce beautiful handcrafted items that match the quality and authenticity of traditional products. I am always eager to participate in exhibitions and cultural events that showcase our heritage and attract visitors and tourists.

Palm frond weaving remains a living traditional craft in the United Arab Emirates, and I hope to be among those who preserve this heritage and pass it on to future generations.
