This edition of Al-Hima is published amid conflict and displacement—a painful reality Lebanon knows well. Yet, the Lebanese people and SPNL remain resilient, supporting displaced families while advancing environmental and development goals. Though turmoil will pass, the land endures as a refuge. SPNL continues to pioneer nature conservation and improve livelihoods, thanks to its dedicated team and strong collaboration with local, regional, and international partners. This issue showcases inspiring success stories shaped by those partnerships—partners who embraced SPNL’s vision and recognized the Hima approach as a powerful, adaptable model for conserving nature and cultural heritage.
“Think globally, act locally” is a guiding principle embraced by SPNL. But SPNL goes even further—thinking locally and working globally, bridging grassroots action with international cooperation. In line with this vision, Homat Al Hima International (HHI) was established to connect local conservation efforts with global platforms. This edition of AlHima Magazine features inspiring initiatives that protect nature while enhancing the wellbeing of communities. It also celebrates successful collaborations with valued partners such as the European Union, Leo Burnett, CABS, BirdLife International, IUCN, and many others who continue to believe in the power of the Hima approach to make lasting change—locally, regionally, and globally.
This year marks a special milestone as SPNL proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 1993, SPNL became the first official IUCN national partner in Lebanon, setting the stage for decades of collaboration in conservation. This special edition of Al Hima is published in partnership with IUCN, showcasing its impactful efforts in protecting biodiversity and ecosystems, especially across the Arab region, through its Regional Office for West Asia (IUCN ROWA). It also highlights Homat Al Hima—the dedicated Hima guardians—local champions trained and empowered by SPNL to protect nature and vital resources.
This magazine, Al Hima, is a heartfelt gift to Arab environmentalists in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL). It serves as a platform to communicate SPNL’s mission of preserving nature through the revival and promotion of the ancient Hima system—designating protected areas managed by local communities. The vision is to see a Hima in every village and town across the Arab world. This call to action is gaining momentum, especially among the youth, who are increasingly inspired by the dream of a greener, healthier future and more sustainable ways of living in harmony with nature.
