A tree for someone you love

This is a reforestation project launched by Lebanon’s Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) and Air France – KLM in cooperation with local and international partners, with the aim of enhancing the spirit of association with the village and conserving biodiversity through the establishment of a social and emotional relationship between man and the earth through the act of planting trees.

This project takes place in municipalities with established Hima (community-based approach used for the conservation of sites, species, habitats, and people) and involves all segments of the community, including students, scouts, hunters, and conservationists, social and humanitarian NGOs, as well as companies and private sector institutions.

As per the project mechanism, the municipality with established Hima prepares a plot for tree planting and provides seedlings to the participants from amongst locals or friends, where the participant chooses the type of tree and the number allowed and plants it in honor of someone, living or departed. This information is recorded in a special schedule at the municipality, and a copy is given to SPNL.
In this way, the municipality cooperates with those who planted trees in protecting, maintaining and supervising the growth of the trees, which have become a name and an identity in the hearts and souls of those who planted them.
The importance of trees :
In addition to being aesthetically decorative, trees contribute to the cohesion of the soil and prevent erosion, something that is done by installing the roots of the trees in the soil. They also contribute to reducing floods and have a major role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and producing oxygen gas. In addition, they play a major economic role, as they provide fruits for food or medical use, and also provides wood for heating or for use in building homes, furniture and décor.
How to plant trees :
Spring, early spring, is usually the right time to plant a tree, but some trees need different seasons; some may be planted in winter and others in summer.
We must:
– Choose trees that suit the climatic conditions in the area to be cultivated
– Know the type of soil and how much water the tree will need
– The planting process is done by seedling or seed
– Create a hole appropriate to the seedling size
– Gently put the seedlings into the hole gently and carefully
– The soil is lowered to cover the seedling until the beginning of the stem
– After completing its covering with soil, pressure is applied with appropriate force on the circumference of the stem, in order to increase the soil consistency around the stem and with the roots at the bottom.
– Watering the hole with water

Tree Care :
– It is best to surround the tree with what protects it, such as a protective fence, preventing animal abuse, and even messing by children
– Caring for the tree’s irrigation and pruning, and removing weeds from its surroundings, especially in the early stages of growth
– Monitoring its leaves and branches in anticipation of the emergence of insects or any other observable diseases or symptoms, and then treating them in an appropriate manner.

« Un arbre pour un bien-aimé ! »
