SNOW Session on Water Inspires Children in Zouk Mikhael

At La Maison de la Culture in Zouk Mikhael, a group of eager young learners gathered today for a unique educational experience under the SNOW program—an initiative of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) designed to nurture environmental awareness and stewardship among children.

This session focused on one of the planet’s most precious resources: water. Through engaging discussions, interactive games, and creative exercises, the children explored the essential role water plays in sustaining life, supporting ecosystems, and shaping communities.

Learning Through Play

The day was not about textbooks and lectures, but about discovering through experience. Children were encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts, and reflect on their daily use of water—whether at home, in school, or in their neighborhoods.

To wrap up the session, the children participated in a fun and lively water management activity, which required teamwork and problem-solving. Laughter and collaboration filled the room as the kids learned that every small action counts when it comes to conserving this vital resource.

A Space for Dialogue and Growth

The choice of venue—La Maison de la Culture—added a special dimension to the gathering. More than just a cultural space, it serves as a hub for dialogue and community-building, bringing together different segments of the population to share, learn, and grow in harmony. By hosting SNOW, it reaffirmed its role as a space where knowledge, creativity, and civic values intersect.

Building Future Guardians of Nature

The SNOW program (School with No Walls) has been a cornerstone of SPNL’s educational mission, taking learning beyond classrooms and into real-life contexts. Whether through birdwatching in Hima sites, exploring biodiversity, or engaging in thematic sessions like today’s focus on water, the program is designed to instill a sense of responsibility toward the environment.

By empowering children with knowledge and curiosity, SNOW helps raise a new generation of guardians of nature, equipped with the awareness and values needed to face Lebanon’s pressing environmental challenges.

A Ripple Effect of Hope

As the children left La Maison de la Culture, their smiles and excitement were a reminder of the transformative power of education. Each of them carried with them not only newfound knowledge about water but also the conviction that their individual and collective actions matter.

In a time when Lebanon’s natural resources are under immense pressure, initiatives like SNOW provide a much-needed ripple of hope—turning awareness into action, and action into a more sustainable future.

Al Hima Magazine 5th Issue

This edition of Al Hima magazine weaves together inspiring stories of nature conservation and community resilience, highlighting how Lebanon is being stitched back to life—one Hima at a time. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) continues its mission to preserve the country’s natural heritage by empowering local communities. A cornerstone of this effort is the BioConnect project, funded by the European Union, which has achieved three national firsts: Lebanon’s first natural park (Upper Matn), first geological park (Shouf-Jezzine), and first endowment Hima (Btekhnay).
