SPNL Launches Local Eco-Guide Training Program under “Homat Al Hima” and “Hima Trails”

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) has launched a specialized training program to prepare local eco-guides under its “Homat Al Hima” (Guardians of the Hima) and “Hima Trails” initiatives. The program aims to empower village residents to play a leading role in environmental guiding and to promote responsible and sustainable tourism.

A Comprehensive Capacity-Building Program

The training combines theoretical and practical components, focusing on:

  • Local biodiversity and ecosystem conservation

  • Principles of eco-tourism and responsible travel

  • Guiding and communication skills

  • Safety procedures for hiking and outdoor activities

  • Field visits and practical trail-guiding sessions

Through hands-on learning and guided fieldwork, participants gain direct experience in managing eco-tourism activities and engaging visitors in environmental awareness.

Creating Jobs and Protecting Natural Heritage

This initiative contributes to creating local employment opportunities, particularly for youth in rural areas, while strengthening the role of Homat Al Hima as guardians of nature and cultural heritage.

By reinforcing community ownership and stewardship, the program enhances residents’ connection to their land and natural resources, supporting long-term environmental protection and sustainable rural development.

Commitment to Sustainable Tourism and Community Empowerment

SPNL emphasized that investing in local capacities is a cornerstone of effective conservation and sustainable development. The training program forms part of the association’s broader strategy to expand the Hima Trails network and promote eco-tourism across Lebanon in partnership with local communities and municipalities.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to continuing similar training and development initiatives that empower communities, protect biodiversity, and strengthen sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.

This latest edition comes at a critical moment for environmental action in Lebanon and the wider region, bringing together scientific insight, traditional knowledge, and global perspectives under the unifying theme: “From Ridge to Coast, One Hima at a Time.”
